What Is Shadowing?
Shadowing means listening to English and speaking just behind it. Focus on phrases, stress, and connected sounds, rather than matching the speaker’s exact pitch.
You do not need to shadow the whole passage from the start. Choose a short piece of English you understand, then prepare by listening to the model and saying it aloud.
Practice in Five Steps
1. Listen: first, get the main idea
Listen once without looking at the English text. Who is speaking, where are they, and what do they want to say? You do not need every word if you understand the purpose. Remember what you missed and move to the next step.
2. Understand: check meaning and sound
Read the English text and translation, checking words and phrases you did not understand. Then listen again while following the English text. Words you missed may be unstressed or linked to the sounds around them.
3. Speak: listen and record, one sentence at a time
After listening to one model sentence, pause and say it aloud yourself. When listening back, choose one word to work on instead of trying to fix everything at once. You can divide long sentences into meaningful phrases.
4. Read Along: look at the English and read at the same time
Speak along with the model audio. Instead of giving every word the same length, notice the difference between stressed words and the shorter parts around them. If you cannot keep up, slow down or return to one sentence at a time.
5. Shadow: hide the English and follow just behind
Speak just behind the model audio. Stopping partway through or receiving a low score does not erase your practice. Compare your recording with the model and choose one thing to try next. It is fine to finish the day’s practice there.

Common Difficulties
It is too fast to keep up
Slow down or practice a shorter section. Once you understand the words, try listening to the audio several times. Finishing a long lesson in one go does not need to be your only goal.
There is nowhere I can speak aloud
You can work on listening and understanding first, then return to speaking later. Listening-only practice and completion of all five steps are recorded separately, so you can see what you have done and what comes next.
I worry too much about scores
Voice assessments also depend on the recording environment and analysis method. A score is one guide for practice. Compare recordings of the same lesson, sentence, speed, and method, and notice what feels easier to say than before.
